Operation Restore Defenestration

In 1996, before the idea of the Black Rock Arts Foundation was a twinkling in the eyes of its founders, many of our present Board members showed their support for a radical and groundbreaking art installation that has since become a San Francisco art landmark.

On the corner of 6th and Howard Streets stands Defenestration, by Brian Goggin and his team of collaborators. Defenestration is a four story building with anthropomorphic furniture diving out of windows and scurrying on its’ walls. Locals and visitors alike continue to flock to this playful installation.

Originally expected to be up for only a year, Defenestration has weathered the elements for nearly thirteen. Although the piece is deeply loved by the community, it has fallen into unfortunate disrepair.

The Black Rock Arts Foundation is pleased to be able to fiscally sponsor ‘Operation Restore Defenestration.’ Through this fundraising effort, Goggin and his crew will be able to repair and improve the artwork, making it again beautiful by day and vibrant by night.  Goggin has already begun working with a structural engineer, volunteers and assistants to restore the work.

The 1:AM Gallery will host a month long exhibit (ending April 2) celebrating Defenestration, including examples of restoration work in progress and artwork for sale.    All proceeds from the event and exhibit go directly to the restoration project.
