Duel Nature

 

In Reno, Nevada, Kate Raudenbush’s elegant, conceptual work Duel Nature was installed on the waterfront of the Truckee River from May 21, 2010 until December 1, 2010. First exhibited at Burning Man in 2006, Duel Nature was BRAF’s third sculptural installation at this site, located on the corner of Sierra Street and Island Avenue. With the support of the City of Reno, BRAF’s Advisory Board, Board and volunteers, BRAF transformed this unused empty lot in the downtown area into an attractive ‘art park’ with rotating exhibitions. It is now a popular performance venue and community gathering space, and has earned the support and appreciation of City officials and the public, alike.

Duel Nature

“Duel Nature references the spiral of our human DNA. The struggle inherent to the duality of the human condition is expressed by the violence of the raw plasma-cut, bolted steel exterior, in contrast with the vitality of the interior blood-red mirror. As visitors gather inside the vibrant core of the sculpture, their myriad reflections remind us of our shared genetic bond and our shared humanity.” says the artist Kate Raudenbush.

 

 

“Burning Man gives artists grants each year for the creation of amazing interactive sculptures,” said Crimson Rose, BRAF Board Member and Art Director for Burning Man.  “With Reno being the gateway to Black Rock City, BRAF’s Civic Art Program is committed to working with Reno’s Arts and Culture Commision and local businesses to continue sharing this incredible artwork with northern Nevada”
